The Most Talked About Players at Wimbledon 2024

With Wimbledon 2024 now in the history books, we decided to take a look at which players were the biggest talking points of the tournament.

Using social listening data from Brandwatch, we tracked how many posts on social media platforms were made about each player during Wimbledon 2024, from the first day of the tournament (July 1st) up to the day following the Final (July 15th).

The posts were then also analysed to also discover which players had the highest number of positive posts about them, as well as the highest number of negative posts.

The Players With The Most Social Media Posts About Them During Wimbledon 2024

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two most talked about players on social media were the two Men’s finalists, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. Despite being on the wrong end of the result in the Final, Djokovic actually had more posts written about him during the tournament, just over 3,000 more than Alcaraz.

One of the big talking points during the tournament was Djokovic’s post match interview after his Round of 16 victory over Holger Rune. The controversial scenes were a hot topic on social media and contributed toward Djokovic’s total of 662,000 posts surpassing the 659,000 about Alcaraz, as well as Rune ranking fourth with 214,000 posts.

Although Andy Murray only actually played one match in the tournament, the two time Wimbledon champion’s final time at SW19 was one of the big stories of the fortnight. In total there were 244,000 posts that mentioned Murray in them.

Only two players from the Women’s side of the draw featured in the top 10, the two finalists, Barbora Krejcikova and Jasmine Paoloni. Although Krejcikova was crowned champion for the first time, it was actually Paolini who was a hotter talking point on social media, with more than double the amount of posts, 124,000 compared to 58,000 about the Czech winner.

Also in the top 10 from the Men’s draw were Jannik Sinner (fifth), Daniil Medvedev (sixth), Lorenzo Musetti (eighth) and Taylor Fritz (ninth).

Djokovic Had The Highest Number of Positive Social Media Posts

Love him or hate him, the 24 time Grand Slam champion isn’t exactly one to fly under the radar. Although Djokovic and Alcaraz were very close for the total number of social media posts about them during Wimbledon, there was a much bigger gap in terms of the number of those posts with a positive sentiment. 14% of posts about Djokovic had a positive sentiment, 94,000 in total, the most of any player in the tournament.

In second place was Andy Murray with 37,000, 15% of all the posts about him. He is followed in the top five by Paolini, Sinner and Rune.

Paolini had the highest percentage of posts that had a positive sentiment at 27%, followed by her fellow Wimbledon finalist, Krejcikova at 26%.

Of the most talked about Men’s players, it was the Italian Lorenzo Musetti who had the biggest share of positive posts at 15%, 0.04% more than Murray.

Although Alcaraz was right behind Djokovic for the total number of posts about him, surprisingly only 2% of those posts had a positive sentiment.

Djokovic Also Had The Highest Number of Negative Posts

Although Djokovic had the highest number of positive social media posts about him, he did also have the highest number of negative ones too. 16% of all posts mentioning the Serbian were negative, compared to 14% that were positive.

Carlos Alcaraz had the second highest number, but also the lowest overall percentage of all the players in the top 10. The highest percentage of negative posts were for Jannik Sinner at 22%, followed by Medvedev’s 20%.

Although Emma Raducanu wasn’t mentioned in enough posts to make the overall top 10 most talked about players during Wimbledon 2024, the high percentage of negative posts about the Brit meant she did have the 10th highest number of negative posts in total.
